Mom About Town began with a quest to find a decent, good looking diaper bag when my son was born. I wanted something that didn't scream diaper bag and wouldn't look like I was going out for a hike or carrying a piece of luggage when I was visiting friends, grocery shopping, attending special functions, etc. After experiencing the frustration of using a much too large name brand bag, my camera bag, and lastly a friends purse I decided I could design one of my own. I used the friends purse which her mom had made for her as a springboard for my ideas. The same friend suggested looking into Hemp for the material. At this point I had decided not to go back to my career as a massage therapist and determined to stay at home and begin this new venture. About a year and a half later in late 1997, research behind me, business loan in hand, and local sewing contractor lined up we began.

We are based in the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina. I design our bags and make up the initial patterns and samples. We use a local sewing contractor (another woman owned small business) who cuts most of our goods and then hands the goods over to seamstresses at home to sew our goods. Our company is based on true cottage industry and our goods are sewn one at a time by caring and experienced hands. Some of our seamstresses have been laid off from the nearby textile mills or have retired from them. This works well for us as we are able to produce a product by experienced hands yet in smaller quantities to insure consistancy in the quality of our goods.

It's important for us to stay local as much as possible. Our goal is to produce a quality product that is practical, useful, and enjoyable to use. The fact that it's made from materials that are sustainable or reuseable is equally important. Hemp and organic cotton have been chosen as some of our main fabrics because of their strength, sustainability, and beauty.
